BAG Airport Sector mission to India

15/03/2010 to 18/03/2010

Date: 15 - 18 March 2010

Venue: Delhi & Mumbai

Air passenger growth in India has been one of the highest in the world, and is expected to surpass countries like China, France and Australia in the years to come. India's civil aviation market has grown at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18 percent and was worth UD $5.6 billion in 2008. The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) has forecast a total market of more than 100 million passengers by 2010. In addition 3.4 million tonnes of cargo per annum is expected to be handled by 2010.

Airports Authority of India (AAI), a Ministry Of Civil Aviation organisation has the mandate to develop Airport Infrastructure in India to meet the challenges of growing passenger traffic and cargo volumes. AAI manages 125 Airports, which include 11 International Airports, 08 Customs Airports, 81 Domestic Airports and 25 Civil Enclaves at Defence Airfields. AAI also provides Air Traffic Management Services (ATMS) over entire Indian Air Space and adjoining oceanic areas with ground installations at all Airports and 25 other locations to ensure safety of Aircraft operations.

Keeping in line with policy of liberalisation, the Government of India has decided to modernise the major International Airports and attract private participation in order to induct the much-needed capital for expansion and modernisation of metro airports to world class standards. Four metro airports at Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hydearbad are being developed and operated by private entities through PPP concessions while Kolkata and Chennai are being developed by the Airport Authority Of India.

Indian airlines have some 400 aircraft on order from Airbus and Boeing over the next 10 years with a total investment value of US$30 billion.  This needs to be matched with investment and infrastructure.  It is estimated that a further US$20 billion investment is required in airports, air traffic control (ATC) and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities.

Current status of various airport projects under implementation is given in the accompanying India Airport Sector report; and there are number of opportunities for UK companies to participate including modernisation, expansion of metro airports, non metro airports and green field airports identified by various state governments in order to promote local tourism.

Significant investment of up to US$ 5 billion will be required in developing world class ground handling, cargo and logistics facilities, including high output distribution centres at major airports.

In view of the above opportunities UKTI has commissioned BAG to organise a mission to Delhi and Mumbai. The primary objective of the visit is to promote British skills and technology in the airport development sector but it will also provide the opportunity for participants to establish new and develop existing relationships with key Indian airport sector contacts and to learn about the opportunities for their products/services in this market.

Attached please find the flyer containing full details of the programme and a copy of the most recent Airport Sector Report for India.
