A|D|S Scotland

A|D|S Scotland is the trade association for the aerospace, defence, space and naval sectors in Scotland. Established in 2005, the organisation works with stakeholders such as Scottish Enterprise, the Scottish Executive and the Scottish Parliament to ensure the continued success of these vital industries in Scotland.

A|D|S Scotland's goal is continued growth and success for the Scottish sector.

Smiths Detection - Meet the Technologist - 24 June, Glasgow

On 24th June A|D|S Scotland provided hi-tech companies with an ideal opportunity to meet senior technologists from Smiths Detection. Attendees also heard about security technology requirements from a senior Home Office representative.

Business Opportunities in China and India , Edinburgh - 18 February 2010

ADS in association with Trade & Investment and Scottish Development International are delighted to announce a China and India aerospace briefing event on 18th February.

With the rapid growth of the Chinese and Indian aerospace sector, value chain opportunities are emerging in all areas of advanced engineering. Opportunities will be discussed for advanced engineering companies to supply goods and services to these markets.

"Big Science" - Royal Observatory, Edinburgh - 24 February 2010

On 16th December 2009, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) announced a five-year £2.4 billion investment strategy in world-leading multi-disciplinary science and technology, designed to deliver maximum scientific, societal, international and economic benefit for the . The strategy includes commitments to maintain and develop key national and international science facilities, whose major procurement programmes offer a host of opportunities to companies. A|D|S Scotland now gives Scottish organisations the opportunity to hear at first hand how they can get involved.

Lockheed Martin - Meet the technologist - 7th December, Glasgow

A|D|S is delighted to announce the details of its next meeting of the All Members Forum. On 7th December A|D|S Scotland will be providing hi tech companies with an ideal opportunity to meet senior technologists from Lockheed Martin, present their company's technology, capability and research and hear how Lockheed Martin and Lockheed Martin UK deliver their vision to be recognised as technology leaders throughout the UK and beyond. Opportunities in Nuclear Fusion

A|D|S Scotland (formerly SBAC Scotland) held a very successful All Members Forum on 22nd October providing companies and academia with an ideal platform to hear about the opportunites they have to benefit from the £200-£300 million annual spend over the next ten years from the contstruction of the world's largest fusion experiment - ITER - underway in Cadarache, France.

Scottish Aerospace, Defence and Naval Industry Survey 2007

The information provided in this booklet is primarily the result of the A|D|S Scotland Survey of 2006 undertaken by A|D|S Scotland in 2007. This survey covers the aerospace, defence and marine sectors in .

    • There continued to be approximately 170 companies in involved in aerospace, defence and naval sectors in 2006.
    • Together they employed more than 16,000 people earning 34 per cent above the Scottish average wage. This is an increase on 2005 when the sector employed 15,000 people earning 33 per cent above the Scottish average wage
    • In 2006 total sales for the sector were £2.28 billion. This is an encouraging increase on 2005 total sales for the sector of £2.1 billion.
    • Total orders in 2006 were £2.31 billion. This represents a significant increase on 2005 orders of £1.834 billion
    • Scotland continues to invest significantly for the future with over 500 apprentices or 3 per cent of the workforce. In 2005 there also over 500 apprentices but this represented or 4 per cent of the workforce due to the fewer total employees in 2005.
    • £84 million was invested in R&D or 4% of sales. This is slightly down on 2005 when £91 million was invested in R&D or 5% of sales.

Space IGT SME Days

As you may be aware, the Space Special Interest Group will be running two SME days for the Space Innovation and Growth Team project to ensure that views are captured from this community.

The following dates are fast approaching and we believe the seminar would be more beneficial with a greater number of participants. To gain the maximum input from this community we would appreciate your support to drive this out to SMEs who may be within your reach. This may include those who have a capability for space but do not consider themselves space users.

The two dates cover both Glasgow and London , but does not mean attendees should be limited by their location. Attendees are welcomed to attend either seminar.

We trust you will reach out to all those you think would benefit from the seminar, so please forward this e-mail to others you think may find this event of interest and express the urgency to register. About A|D|S Scotland

Following consultation with the Scottish aerospace industry and key stakeholders, SBAC established an operation in 2005 to support sector competitiveness and provide a targeted programme of services for members in Scotland. Scotland has been at the heart of the aerospace industry since its very beginnings and is currently attracting major international investments on the basis of its skilled workforce, global links, strong and diverse local supplier base and excellent research teams.

The Scottish Aerospace Strategy, launched in March 2003 by Scottish Enterprise, aims to create or safeguard approximately 4,500 jobs over three years. The aerospace and defence industries in Scotland employee more than 30,000 people in around 140 local companies. It is a key part of the UK industry with a mix of both civil and defence activities undertaken by prime contractors and SMEs. A|D|S Scotland will work with the industry base, the Centre of Excellence, Scottish Enterprise and other stakeholders to develop a range of services and programmes geared to business development, industrial transformation and raising the visibility of Scottish aerospace capability on a global scale.

A|D|S Scotland aims to provide a range of services and offer best value to Scottish companies through, in particular:

  • support to global promotions
  • market information and intelligence
  • establishing fruitful communications channels with government
  • delivering industrial transformation programmes
  • providing access to decision makers in primes and first/second tier suppliers services and benefits
  • logistical support through the provision of office facilities, accommodation
  • visit programme co-ordination and meeting arrangements
  • communication and networking events with key stakeholders
  • office support and related services including conference room facilities

Two new members on A|D|S Scotland Council

A|D|S Scotland is delighted to welcome 2 new members to its Council - Angela Mathis, CEO of ThinkTank Maths based in Edinburgh and Ian Burnett, Director of Vector Aerospace in Perth have accepted invitations to join the Council.

Boeing Technology Day, Glasgow, October 2008

On 7th October A|D|S Scotland held its 4th All Members Forum meeting which provided companies with an ideal opportunity to present their company's technology, capability and research to senior executives from The Boeing Company; hear how Cranfield University is working with Boeing; and find out how MoD's Industrial Participation policy can assist companies.

At the meeting presenters included:-

A|D|S Scotland Council

A|D|S Scotland is given its strategic direction by the A|D|S Scotland Council. Council is led by senior execuitives from global companies with a Scottish presence, including SELEX GALILEO, Thales, Raytheon, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Goodrich, Teledyne, Inter-Tec and Spirit Aerosystems.

SC21 - 21st centrury supply chains

Twenty first century supply chains (SC21) aims to accelerate the competitiveness of the aerospace and defence industry. With international competition increasing, the participation of companies of all sizes throughout the UK supply chain is crucial to delivering real results from this modernisation programme. Signatories have undertaken seven commitments designed to ensure the UK supply chain remains competitive and delivers increased value to customers.
